Grammar Translation Method dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris: Analisis Kualitatif Terhadap Pengembangan Kemampuan Membaca

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efektivitas Grammar Translation Method (GTM) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa sekolah menengah pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. GTM dikenal sebagai metode tradisional yang menekankan penguasaan tata bahasa dan penerjemahan teks, namun sering dikritik karena minimnya pengembangan aspek komunikatif siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi kelas, wawancara semi-terstruktur, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa GTM mampu meningkatkan pemahaman struktur kalimat dan kosakata siswa, serta membentuk pola berpikir analitis dalam membaca teks. Namun, keterampilan berbicara dan interaksi verbal siswa masih tergolong rendah karena kurangnya stimulus komunikasi dalam penerapan metode ini. Meskipun demikian, GTM tetap relevan dalam konteks akademik tertentu dan direkomendasikan untuk dikombinasikan dengan metode yang lebih komunikatif. Temuan ini mendukung pandangan bahwa tidak ada metode tunggal yang dapat memenuhi seluruh aspek pembelajaran bahasa secara menyeluruh, melainkan diperlukan integrasi strategis antarpendekatan.
