Shampoo Formulation With The Addition Ginger Extract As An Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Abstract

Background - Dandruff is a scalp disorder characterized by the excessive shedding of scalp skin cells. It is a
common issue faced by people of all age groups. The lipophilic basidiomycete yeast Malassezia furfur
(Pytirosporum ovale) is identified as the causative organism for dandruff. Malassezia metabolizes sebaceous
lipids into fatty acids and triglycerides, which accelerate the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes. Anti-dandruff
treatments are widely available in Indonesia, especially herbal ones. One of the plants that has anti-fungal
potential is ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.)
Purpose - This literature review aims to examine the potential of ginger extract as a natural active ingredient in the formulation of anti-dandruff shampoo
methodology - by collecting data from various scientific journals on ginger extract and hair care product
formulations.
Findings - based on literature studies of anti-dandruff shampoo Ginger extract with various shampoo bases
shows ginger extract shampoo with Na CMC base Average pH 6.8 and HPMC base pH 5.5. high foam produced from both shampoo formulations ranges from 4.1-14.7 cm. The results obtained viscosity on both bases is 1053-2372 Cp. Based on other literature studies The average pH was found to be 6.3, The average solids content was
1.2, and the average surface tension was 35.3. Research on ginger-based shampoo formulations has shown that they meet established safety and usability standards, including pH, foam height, and viscosity, ensuring their effectiveness and consumer safety.
Originality - From these two journals, a shampoo formulation can be created with the addition of ginger extract
which can maximally inhibit the growth of dandruff.
